ICANN and IANA generate lists of domains at the top level, such as .uk or .au, but these lists do not go deeper than that top level into those namespaces, to indicate .co.uk, .me.uk, .ac.uk, .gov.uk, .com.au, .net.au, etc. Software developers, browser software, certificate authorities, email services, messaging providers, html form validation, Search Engines, and other software / integration need more depth and detail, within those top level namespaces. Enter the Public Suffix List (PSL), https://publicsuffix.org, a volunteer-based repository that contains more depth of detail about the administrative namespace. This architectural discussion about the PSL will discuss the collaboration with ICANN and IANA, automation, use-cases, and other important future directions that this crucial open directory takes.
